PAT Testing in Coventry for business, landlords, DISCO's & entertainers

Why PAT Test?

PAT testing or “portable appliance testing” is a vital part of any health & safety policy for small businesses in Coventry & the Midlands. It can be used by schools, theatres, small business & charities to ensure the electrical safety of equipment.

If you're a charity selling or giving electrical equipment as part of your work - do you PAT test the appliances beforehand? It’s also becoming common for residential care homes to ask that equipment taken in for residents is PAT tested as well.

Some church organisations are organising PAT testing too, having recognised how many things with plugs they have. It covers office equipment such as photocopiers, laminating machines and even the kettle in the kitchen!

It's all about being safe

Statistics from the Health & Safety Executive show that 25% of all reportable electrical accidents involve portable appliances or office equipment.

The Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers, employees and self-employed persons to comply with the provisions of the regulations. Which means taking reasonably practicable steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of such equipment.

You’re required as a business owner or landlord to implement a systematic and regular program of maintenance, inspection and testing for electrical appliances under your control. This can even include equipment you let employee's take home like laptops, phone chargers and cordless tools.

Do we need to PAT test?

It’s always difficult to decide which appliance needs PAT testing, which is why I’m here – I can do a free site visit to look over your premises to help you decide.

If you’re a Coventry business owner then equipment over 12 months old should be tested to establish its condition then tested at regular intervals. If you run a disco or sound & lighting equipment for a band then venues are probably asking if your kit is tested. In some situations such as a doctors surgery, some of the non-clinical equipment such as PC’s, printers, desk lamps and so on could be tested every two years.

Did you know that if you supply your workforce with laptops, power tools with chargers or mobile phones with chargers – you’re responsible for ensuring the electrical safety of those too?

Are you actually based in Coventry, I don't want to pay travel expenses?

Yes - I am based in Coventry, I don't rent a Coventry phone number & hope potential customers are fooled. As a result, I can do quick turnround if need be and you don't pay extra for my travel time to you.

SO YOU ONLY DO PAT TESTING?

No - I can offer a range of services such as repair & service of a variety of theatrical equipment such as Zero88, Strand Lighting, Selecon, Anytronics, CCT & many others. I’m also a stage lighting designer of 40 years experience covering drama, dance, Irish dance, asian dance, musical theatre and installation specification for churches, drama studios & theatres.

Have you suddenly realised your sound equipment or instruments needs PAT Testing? Did you get booked for a DJ gig in Coventry or the West Midlands and the rider or promoter asks for current Portable Appliance Test certificates?

Can you PAT Test our stage lighting?

The answer is “Yes! I can indeed…”.

A lot of PAT testing businesses are used to small businesses or domestic situations where most of the equipment has 13a square pin plugs or IEC connectors. If they encounter round pin plugs used on stage lighting, they often refuse to test on the grounds that the connector is obsolete. Some testers will fail stage lighting because there are no sleeves on the pins – some even try to PAT test the cable patch!

I used to work for Central Theatre Supplies, so I’m very used to the potential issues around stage lighting especially ex-hire equipment or items ‘discovered’ languishing in store rooms. Unlike some that just have a Coventry phone number I am based in Coventry, I don’t have to inflate my costs to cover travel expenses. Having worked from a base in Birmingham before, I’m more than happy to travel the West Midlands too. Use the contact form below to send me a message and we’ll see what we can arrange.
